FORENSIC SCIENCE KIT
This grant supports the purchase of a Diablo Highway Real World Forensic Science Kit for the high school’s forensics classes. This 11 lesson, 9 lab kit is based on a real crime that took place in Texas. The labs and activities are objective-based learning that promote the application of science through real-world problem solving. Students learn forensic science techniques, collect evidence, analyze the evidence, and collaborate in order to solve the mystery.

POETRY ANALYSIS UNIT
This grant supports the purchase of 50 copies each of 6 different poetry books for the newly developed 5th grade poetry analysis unit. The unit will focus on teaching students to both read and respond to poetry and will be taught via poetry book clubs.

MIT DNA, RNA, AND PROTEIN SYNTEHESIS MANIPULATIVE LEGO KITS $10,400
These MIT DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis manipulative LEGO kits are a valuable modeling tool that can now be used by all 9th grade Biology students. These LEGO kits are extremely thorough in detail and correlate with the Biology State Standards of modeling DNA and protein synthesis which rely on making models and connections throughout the course. When students can accurately model DNA, protein synthesis, and mutations, they will be able to better understand genetics and evolution. Unlike most teaching aids, the MIT models are designed to teach what the molecules do, not just what molecules look like.

ALDEN RESPECT/SEL $3,100
The grant is for mentor and supplemental picture books to support our new SEL curriculum framed around our Alden RESPECT values. The books are for both classroom teachers (these books will be accompanied by already-authored lessons) and a new RESPECT resource library for teacher use that will be housed in the Alden Library.

OYSTER UPWELLER FIELD TRIP $210
This grant funds books and field trips to the Duxbury Maritime School for two third grade classrooms. After the field trip, teachers will finalize an oyster unit/curriculum which could be taught to 3rd grade students and go along with future 3rd grade field trips to DBMS.

ONE BOOK, ONE SCHOOL SUMMER READ INITIATIVE
This grant provides a three-tiered program of activities for each grade level at Duxbury Middle School to be executed over the course of a school day. The novel chosen was Count Me In by Varsha Bajaj and the goal of the program is to promote a culture of belonging and community at DMS - a goal that aligns with the School Improvement Plan.

STEM TUBS $2,753
The grant provides all 1st grade students (approximately 190 students per year) with a variety of STEM enrichment activities. Each 1st grade classroom will receive a set of 10 tubs to be used by 2-3 students at a time. The tubs would contain a variety of STEM engineering and design sets, building sets, and critical thinking games. Some of the sets contain task cards to challenge students to solve given problems, others are designed to be open ended. Students would have the opportunity to collaborate with peers to design and build and/or problem solve using critical thinking skills. The tubs would be used as enrichment activities following science and math lessons and could be used for many years.

MARINE SCIENCE FIELD TRIP $150
Field trip to DBMS to learn about the lifecycle of an oyster and local aquaculture in the DBMS marine science labs for students in Mrs. Hanlon and Mrs. Miele’s classes.

LEGO SPIKE PRIME ROBOTICS SETS $26.340
The grant supports the purchase of 78 Lego Spike Prime Robotics sets to replace the current Lego EV3s that aged out because of wear and tear. The new robotics sets have many unique benefits over the EV3 sets such as gender-neutral colors, which erase visual cues that might subtly provide barriers that engage all students to explore the world of coding and robotics. The robots can also easily code with the student’s Chromebooks, unlike the EV3, which required separate computers.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM $4,000
This project funds the refresh of an outdoor classroom in the space in the center of the Outdoor Learning Center behind Alden Elementary and will include wooden benches, fencing, large rocks for seating, wind chimes, sun dial and support materials for all Alden teachers looking for innovative ways to teach outdoors and embrace this wonderful natural setting. This space is intended to be used by students at Alden, DMS and DHS potentially impacting 600 students per year.

5 STATIONARY BIKES $2,314
This grant funds 5 stationary bikes at Alden (3 for the Alden Gym, 1 for the Adjustment Counselor's Room and 1 for the Partnership Room.) The bikes in the gym will help students exercise who are uncomfortable in a large and noisy PE class, post COVID, and also for students who are dealing with an injury that prevents them from participating in PE. The other 2 bikes will be used by Shannon Jones, the Adjustment Counselor, and Michelle McKay who runs the Partnership Room. These last 2 bikes will serve kids who tend to be anxious and need movement breaks and healthy distractions in a supervised environment.

MATH COACHING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES $3,960
This program supports a series of highly personalized training sessions for Alden teachers specifically focused on providing innovative strategies that address learning loss in math due to the COVID pandemic. 

3 SERIES OF BEGINNING READER BOOKS $5,450
This grant funds appropriate decodable texts for small group instruction. They are aligned with phonics and phonemic awareness programs which in turn will target the foundational reading skills being taught.

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP WITH THE CHRISTA MCAULIFFE CENTER AT FRAMINGHAM STATE COLLEGE $1,000
All 8th grade science classes (240 students) will participate in a virtual field trip that includes virtual mission simulations where students work in teams to take on the roles of astronauts, scientists, and engineers engaged in space exploration simulations that test their teamwork, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Students will take on specific jobs and work collaboratively with their peers. The virtual programs are LIVE, engage participants in synchronous activities, and encourage interaction between the participants and the expert program facilitators.


2020

STEAM CHALLENGES
DEF is funding a Major Grant for Kindergarten teachers to conduct monthly STEAM projects and experiments in all 9 classrooms which will nurture students' skills in the areas of creativity, communication, collaboration and curiosity. These challenges will be in the form of child-directed, learning centers that address the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. These skills will be integrated across the curriculum as students read informational texts, write/sketch about their predictions/observations/discoveries, sequence/explain ideas through discussions, connect concepts to their social lives and/or physical environment, etc.

ONLINE LEARNING WITH STUDY.COM
Study.com is a subscription based website that features an extensive library of educational videos/articles/lessons covering all imaginable academic disciplines. The subscription materials were used to supplement the rollout of the new 8th grade Civics curriculum that was piloted during the 2019-2020 school year. There are hundreds of videos and news articles that support all aspects of the 8th grade civics curriculum. Complex topics are clearly explained and students have benefit greatly from being able to access the videos in an on demand style throughout the year.

YOGA TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT
DEF is funding training for DMS and DHS teachers to be trained to lead yoga classes that are offered to both students and DPS staff.  Additionally we will be funding the purchase of supplemental yoga equipment for use in these classes.   

FITDESK BIKES
DEF is funding the purchase of 3 Fitdesk Bike Desks that will be used by middle and high school students while they are in the school library reading or working on their laptops.

MIT DNA/RNA/PROTEIN SYNTHESIS LEGO KITS
DEF is funding a Major Grant for DHS to purchase 2 DNA/RNA/Protein Synthesis LEGO Kits from MIT which are a valuable modeling tool that will benefit all 9th grade students taking the Biology MCAS exam.  The LEGO kits are extremely thorough in detail and correlate with the Biology State Standards of modeling DNA and protein synthesis. The kits are composed of MIT specialized LEGOs that have been created specifically for these topics and include complete classroom lessons that are scaffolded to ensure understanding. 

CBT TRAINING FOR ANXIETY
DEF is funding training in Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT) for Anxiety where DHS psychologists will participate in a comprehensive online program to acquire CBT skills specifically designed to work with anxiety in students.

ONLINE LEARNING WITH THEGREATCOURSES.COM
DEF is funding membership for DHS teachers across all subject areas to access TheGreatCourses.com series which that covers many topics (technology, chemistry, biology, mythology, modern history, ancient history, art, and music) in an engaging and easily accessible format. The channel is designed for educational purposes and allows classrooms together or students individually to view educational content in most areas of study. 

ASL SEAL OF BI-LITERACY
DEF approved funding for DHS American Sign language (ASL) students that are seeking to take the Seal of Bi-literacy in ASL exam. This grant will help students by defraying the costs of this particular exam and demonstrate their proficiency in ASL after four years of study.

INDOOR SENSORY PATHS
DEF is purchasing an aesthetically engaging, durable and colorful path specifically designed by Occupational and Physical Therapists to engage young children in a wide variety of sensory movements which will be installed at Chandler Elementary School and Alden School.

LIBRARY BOOKS
DEF is purchasing a variety of books, including Early Readers, Nonfiction, Fiction, Picture Books, and Biographies, for the Chandler School Library that feature real people who have various disabilities, come from various backgrounds, and come from places all over the world.

INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CLASSES
DEF is investing in professional development classes to highlight innovative instructional practices for elementary school teachers to increase student engagement, amp up academic rigor, and challenge students to think beyond academic standards.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING RESOURCE LIBRARY
DEF is purchasing social and emotional development materials for a resource library for the Chandler Elementary, Integrated Preschool and Magic Dragon staff and students.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING MATERIALS
DEF is purchasing materials to create an integrated and inclusive classroom space at Chandler School that fosters social, emotional and academic learning through cooperative and multi-sensory play, learning and discovery.

OUTDOOR SENSORY CIRCUITS AND INDOOR WAIT STATIONS
DEF is purchasing floor stencils, paint and wall clings to create an outdoor sensory path and indoor wait-stations throughout Chandler Elementary School.

FLEXIBLE SEATING EQUIPMENT
DEF is purchasing flexible seating options, such as scoop chairs, standing desks, and lap desks, to be used in classrooms at Chandler Elementary School.

THE FRIENDLY LOOM
DEF is purchasing The Friendly Loom, a large-scale loom, which produces collaborative art as part of a weaving lesson, as a reward for expected behavior, and as an activity for early project finishers at Chandler School.

STEAM MATERIALS
DEF is purchasing materials that introduce Chandler students to coding, engineering and computational thinking.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING RESOURCES
DEF is purchasing social and emotional books and other resources for teachers and parents to help Alden students and parents gain behaviors necessary to navigate a successful life.

FOREST ECOLOGY MODULE
DEF is purchasing in a forest ecology science module and field exploration of vegetation layers, soil, plant surveying, and discovery of plant adaptations for third grade students at Alden.

FOUNDATIONS OF TEACHING READING SUMMER COURSE
DEF is purchasing a course for Duxbury Elementary School teachers to elevate their reading instruction to target specific next steps for advancing students' foundational reading skills and strategies.

RAISING THE BAR IN SOCIAL STUDIES
DEF is purchasing Social Studies teachers to attend the National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference.

SENSORY BREAK EQUIPMENT
DEF is purchasing sensory break equipment such as Yogibos and weighted blankets, for the DMS social worker's office and the classroom to help students with autism, students to self-soothe, and students who need flexible seating.

iPAD PEERS
DEF is purchasing creative and independence-enhancing technology to enable relationship, community building, and problem-solving skills among special education and regular education students at DMS.

ARTIST IN RESIDENT
DEF is funding artist Lisa Courtney, an oil painter, to introduce the art of oil painting to DHS art students.

BACTERIAL CRISPR KITS
DEF is purchasing three CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) kits to allow DHS AP Biology students to complete cutting-edge gene editing.

CANOE BUILDING KIT
DEF is purchasing a cedar strip canoe building kit for DHS Woodworking II students. 

TIME AND TIDES INTRODUCTORY SILKSCREEN WORKSHOP
DEF is investing in a silkscreen and monotype printing workshop for the Time and Tides Program currently running at Duxbury High School.

DHS EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP
DEF is purchasing the initial funding to create a sustainable scholarship account to allow for equal access for all students to take advantage of DHS educational travel opportunities.

CHARACTER STRONG LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY AND CURRICULUM
DEF is purchasing the Character Strong Leadership assembly and its curriculum to help build and maintain strong student leadership at DHS.

MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION CONVENTION AND TECHNOLOGY IN MUSIC EDUCATION CONFERENCE
DEF is funding music faculty to attend the Texas Music Educators Association and Technology in Music Education Conference.

VISUAL COMMUICATION EQUIPMENT
DEF is investing in photo and video technology that will be utilized by the school administration team to enhance communication with the district’s staff, students, and families.

GLOBAL COMMUNITY FLAGS
DEF is purchasing international flags to be displayed in DHS of the various international students who currently attend the Duxbury Public Schools.

CALM CLASSROOM
Purchases classroom tools at Chandler School to complement calm classroom initiatives from last year's grant. Items include wobble & ball chairs, desk fidgets, beanbag chairs, standing desks, bouncy bands, yoga teaching certification. 

GUIDED READING LIBRARY
Purchases a guided reading library at Chandler School that is accessible to all Chandler teachers to support the new balanced literacy curriculum.

ALDEN READ ALOUD
Purchases a set of books for each grade level at Alden School for teachers to use as Interactive Read Alouds during the 2018-2019 school year. This will allow each grade level to have the same shared reading experience. 

KEYBOARDING PROGRAM
Funds a modified one-year pilot program at Alden School to teach kids in Grades 3-5 digital literacy and keyboarding skills. This program is more interactive and instructional based whereas the current keyboarding program is more student driven and not digitalized.

HORIZONTAL CLIMBING WALL
Funds a horizontal climbing wall in the Alden gym to add to the already used elements climbing walls at other Duxbury schools.

DRAMA & POETRY MATERIALS
Purchases costumes, props, and two green screens for the 8th grade English video/audio presentations during drama and poetry units. 

VIRTUAL REALITY TEACHING TOOL
Purchases ten student kits of Google Expeditions, which is a virtual reality teaching tool that includes 500 expeditions to be used in a social studies classroom at Duxbury Middle School.

COMMUNITU GARDEN
Purchases two raised garden beds for a community garden to be installed at Duxbury Middle School.

ESL CHROME BOOKS
Purchases 6 Chromebooks to use with ESL (English as a Second Language) students with a goal of improving writing and technology skills. 

PERSONAL FOOD COMPUTERS
Funds the building and operation of 3-4 personal food computers (PFC) that are designed to grow a variety of foods in a controlled environment. PFC's will be used in a variety of biology classes at Duxbury High School. 


2017

82DHS (8th to DHS)
DSU piloted this program for the first time last year and the 8th grade students responded positively. DEF is funding the professional development at DSU to support this program.

OSMO Explorer Kit Program 
DEF is purchasing the OSMO Explorer Kit program for all special education teachers at Chandler School.  OSMO is an IPAD accessory that provides highly motivating, fun games that foster basic academic skills, problem solving, introduction to coding, and many more skills. 

DMS Robotics - Lego Mindstorm Robotics EV3
DEF is investing in training for the new coach of the DMS Robotics Team and two new Lego Mindstorm Robotics EV3 kits to expand the team.

Calm Classroom
DEF is investing in the implementation of Calm Classroom, a research-based mindfulness technique program, to assist students and teachers at all four schools in “developing self-awareness, mental focus and inner calm.”   We are purchasing training materials and program materials for each school.  

Sound Field System
DEF is purchasing a sound field system in the Alden School Library to offer the Librarian more flexibility during lessons and provide students with a better opportunity to “link in” to the lesson being taught.

National Social Studies Conference- National Conference 2017
DEF is sending this teacher to the NCSS Social Studies Conference in San Francisco, in the hopes that she will present on the Mock Trials she uses in her World History classes, including the Industrial Revolution and World War II.  She will attend workshops presented by teachers from all over the country as well. 

ASLTA (American Sign Language Teachers Association) National Conference
DEF is sending the DHS Sign Language teacher to the ASLTA National Conference is a four-day intensive professional development training for US American Sign Language teachers.

Entrepreneurship
DEF is re-granting the balance of funding granted last year to cover next year's costs and guarantee the sustainability of the program. 

Secret Soldiers, Theatre Espresso
Channing Howe Memorial Grant 

DEF provided the funding for an educational theater company to visit DHS to perform “Secret Soldiers: Women Who Fought in the Civil War,” a play about women who disguised themselves as men in order to fight.     

National Conference for Teachers of English (NCTE) Conference
DEF is funding the cost of the registration and travel expenses to the National Conference for Teachers of English for two DMS English teachers.

Flexible Seating
DEF is investing in a variety of flexible seating options for students in several Alden classrooms to expand a pilot to determine if a variety of workspaces helps students work best given their learning styles and needs.

Foreign Language Classroom Extension Materials
DEF will fund a library of reading materials for all language classrooms at DMS in order to (1) increase the amount of authentic and/or innovative reading materials in the target language available to students, and (2) provide opportunities for personalized learning and differentiated instruction through extension activities. 

Art Exploration and the Future!
DEF is funding the purchase of virtual reality paint technology where DHS artists can draw in the round.  

World Language Professional Development in Teaching  For Proficiency
DEF will fund seven members of the World Language DMS and DHS staff to attend the MAFLA (Massachusetts Foreign Language Association) Proficiency Academy. This four-day intensive professional development opportunity will provide training to continue the work of transforming the current curriculum to a proficiency based curriculum, aligned with current World Language and 21st Century standards.  

World History in Virtual Reality
DEF is funding the purchase of virtual reality technology to allow DMS World History students to virtually visit the places they study in class.    

NoRedInk Premium - Improving Student Writing 
DEF is funding a pilot for 300 student licenses to test NoRedInk Premium, a program which helps help students improve their grammar, mechanics, usage, and writing skills in an engaging and interactive way.  

Mastering Hands - On Science with a Science Learning Specialist
DEF is sending two team teachers to participate in a three day, hands on “Science in the Rockies” workshop with award winning educator Steve Spangler to receive instruction and inspiration on how to connect hands-on science ideas to the common core and implement them in the Chandler and Alden classrooms.

STEAM Unit: Kinetic Art, Simple Machines 
DEF is investing in this pilot project to engage 6th grade Visual Art and STEM students in a collaboration to create moving art sculptures.   STEM students will create simple machines and their Art counterparts will create the sculptural elements of the project. 

Alternate Seating/Standing Desks 
DEF is purchasing standing desks for students in DMS and DHS to enhance the attention of students who require multi-sensory input in order to engage in and access the curriculum.

Alden School Maker Space
DEF is investing in the build-out of a MakerSpace at Alden School where students can come with their classes to tinker, build, engineer, imagine and create.  The grant is largely for creating the physical space, purchasing student tables, and storage options for the materials.

21st Century World Language Professional Development 
Allows for each member of the World Language staff  to attend the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) conference for one day.

Active Seating Options for the Classroom
Allows for standing desks and several Hoki stools in this traditional 3rd grade Alden School classroom.

Alternative Seating for Students to Facilitate & Enhance Learning
Allows for 20 standing desks for Alden & DMS to explore how they enhance the attention of students who require multi-sensory input in order to engage in and access the curriculum.

Championing the Teaching of Literature in a STEM World
Allows for four DHS English teachers to attend the National Conference of Teachers of English in Atlanta in November.

Duxbury Student Union Online - Volunteer Database
Funds the creation by DSU of a real-time database of volunteer opportunities accessible to Duxbury youth and their families.  

Duxbury FACTS - Social Norming Campaign
Funds targeted messaging materials to educate students & adults about teen health & wellness through a social norming campaign  to understand perceptions vs. reality on a range of topics.

Entrepreneurship
Funds expenses that students in the new DHS Entrepreneurship course may incur in developing a business plan and product.

Just the Facts:  DMS Students Work with Notable Non-Fiction Authors
Funds day-long DMS school visits by narrative non-fiction authors: Sibert Award Winner Steve Sheinkin (8th graders) and Newbery Honor Winner Deborah Hopkinson (7th graders).

Yoga 4 Classrooms
Funds professional development for two Alden School teachers to attend yoga workshop to develop & test ways to integrate yoga techniques into the classroom to help reduce stress and increase mindfulness.

Math Courses for Elementary Teachers
Funds professional development for 36 Alden & Chandler School teachers to enhance math instruction and learn how to differentiate during small group guided math instruction.

Music Technology
Purchases advanced music technology equipment for the music department for advanced instruction & to broader range of student.

Pond Life Through the Seasons
Funds the design & installation of a pond environment in the courtyard at Chandler School that contains amphibians, fish & natural plant life to support each grade's science curriculum.

Primary Source Partnership Sarah McGuire
Purchases access to quality, multi-level "primary source" non-fiction resources for teacher and student access, including some prepared lesson ideas for teachers.

Yoga for Chandler
Funds a 12-week yoga class for students who are identified by teachers as benefiting from the program which will assist students for optimal cognitive, physical and emotional states for learning.

2015 Legacy Gift
To celebrate innovation in our Duxbury schools, we donated Academic Banners to the new Duxbury High School building.  These recognize an innovative salute in learning achievement across all curriculums at the high school level.


2014

Apple Core Team (Chandler/Alden/DMS/DHS)
This grant covers the development of a program in Duxbury of a sustainable, in-house team of exceptional teachers who immerse iOS and OSX into all aspects of their planning and classroom experience. The grant will provide the core team with the devices necessary to access and utilize the full potential of Apple products.

Online Math Games (Chandler)
This grant provides online math games that align with the Common Core so teachers can provide first and second grade students with enhanced instruction through technology.

Social Thinking Curriculum (Chandler)
This grant provides materials on best practices for educating all students, general and special education. It also provides resources to students who struggle with basic academic concepts to learn and practice social thinking skills.

Preschool Workshop and Instructional Materials (Chandler)
For the first time, the DEF is proud to offer a grant to Chandlers Integrated Preschool program. The grant will allow two preschool teachers to attend a workshop offering specific instruction on how to teach Pre-K Readiness and Writing concepts, and Pre-K Literacy and Math concepts. The concepts covered compliment the Reading Street curriculum and Everyday Math tools already in place at Chandler.

Special Education Social Skills Materials (Chandler)
This grant provides the Special Education department to purchase new materials from the Social Thinking curriculum to be used to support social skills development.

Gymnastics Equipment, Physical Education (Chandler)
The Chandler Physical Education Department will be able to invest in a complete overhaul of the gymnastics program with this grant funded by the DEF. New mats and equipment will provide students with the resources to take full advantage of the gymnastics unit, which offers a greater fitness gain to its students than any other unit in the curriculum.

Laptops and 30Hands Subscription (Alden) 
This grant provides Alden with laptops and 30Hands subscriptions, offering a blended learning platform that allows students and teachers to collaborate and interact in an online instructional environment.

Responsive Classroom Professional Development (Alden)
The workshop covered by this grant will train participating teachers in a Responsive Classroom approach to teaching students, to ensure success in academics.

Outdoor Science Learning Center (Alden/DMS/DHS)
This grant completes a project from 2012-2013, in collaboration with Battelle. The Outdoor Learning Center will provide learning opportunities all across the curriculum, taking advantage of the natural habitats located on and around campus, and providing students with exploratory classrooms where they can interact with the environment and observe living organisms in their natural settings.

Lego Robotics Kits (DMS)
This grant allows all Grade 6 DMS students to learn the fundamentals of Robotics as part of the STEM curriculum. The Lego Robotics Kits will also be used outside the classroom as part of the after-school Robotics Club.

Online Social Studies Game, Grade 8 (DMS)
This grant provides the 8th grade with the computers and software to play the game Banished in support of the 8th grade World History I curriculum. The game offers an enhanced learning environment as students are challenged to grow and maintain a civilization by making decisions that affect the population.

STEP/HEAL Program – Virtual Learning (DMS/DHS)
The STEP program is an innovative approach to handling the various challenges encountered in education today. A blended learning environment is a formal education program in which a student learns in part through online delivery of instruction. This grant provides an online school option for Duxbury students who miss valuable instruction time in the classroom for illness, injury or other reason.

Social Studies Interactive Maps (DMS/DHS)
StrataLogica is an internet-based, interactive suite of maps, globes and charts. This grant provides a subscription to StrataLogica, allowing students and teachers to interact with the maps, take notes on them, collaborate on projects, and make presentations.

Pottery Wheels (DHS)
The DHS Art Department will benefit from new and improved potters wheels, allowing students to focus on technique and strengthen the skill set offered through the pottery program.

Accompanist for DHS Choir (DHS)
The DHS Choral program is comprised of over 100 students involved in one or more of its four ensembles: Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, PAC Men, and Here Comes Treble. This grant provides a part-time accompanist for rehearsals, freeing up the instructor from having to play piano, promoting interaction and the ability to provide more direct feedback for students.


2013

Outdoor Science Learning Center (Alden/DMS/DHS)
This grant was a collaboration with Battelle and will provide learning opportunities all across the curriculum. The outdoor classroom will take advantage of the natural habitats located on and around campus, providing students with exploratory classrooms where they can interact with the environment and observe living organisms in their natural settings. 

T1 Nspire Navigator graphing calculators and software (DMS/DHS)
The newest, most innovative, graphing calculator technology, the TI Nspire Systems, will improve, enhance and add to student understanding of mathematical topics and concepts through a discovery-based and engaging approach. This grant supports the development of an ongoing initiative to provide students with a 21st century learning environment. 

iPads for the ELL program
This grant provides iPads as well as necessary applications to assist all ELL students. Duxbury Public Schools will gain by enhancing the ELL program and providing the ELLs with 21st century tools that will aid them to succeed academically and socially in a new culture. 

eBooks Library (Chandler)
This grant will provide eBooks at every reading level and offer benefits to both those that need extra help and those that are trying to push their limits in reading at a more advanced level. 

Mimeo Unit for the SPED program (Chandler)
This grant will allow the SPED program to better engage their students by presenting material in a fun, engaging and interactive manner. The technology will give students the opportunity to learn and practice the skills necessary to better participate in these activities in the general education classroom setting.

Digital Art Printers (DHS)
The DHS Art Department will benefit from a new, large format printer and two high quality photography printers. These printers will benefit students in every level of digital art and most especially those students submitting their work to the AP board.

iPad cart (Chandler)
This grant builds on the 2012 DEF grant to fund iPads for kindergarten students. These additional iPads allow students to continue to have the access that they had during kindergarten and work on meaningful, long term projects. 

iPad cart (Alden)
The additional iPads at Alden will enable students to engage in more, longer-term learning activities that require access to technology both to gather information and to create it.

iPads and apps for SPED program (Alden)
This grant will compliment classroom instruction in both reading and language development, create a more definitive connection to the curriculum as a familiar and motivational learning tool, and provide our students with special needs with skills that are practiced in a familiar and authentic format.

Tetrix Robotics Set (DMS/DHS)
The Tetrix sets will be used in the classroom and in Robotics Club and will allow additional opportunities to introduce STEMs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) into the robotics curriculum.

Seismology equipment and training (DMS)
This project is operated by Weston Observatory, a research laboratory of the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Boston College, in partnership with the Boston College Lynch School of Education. The program introduces students to the nature of scientific inquiry and to the importance of science in their everyday lives. 

Social skills program, partnering with the DSU (DMS)
Duxbury Student Union youth counselors, along with DMS administration, will monitor lunchtime and engage students, providing conversation, creative seating plans, and encouragement to ensure that kids feel safe, involved and included.

Updated iPad History apps (DMS)
This grant will enable Duxbury Middle School Social Studies students the opportunity to integrate existing iPad technology into the curriculum through appropriate application purchase and installation.

Beginning steel drum set for the music department (DMS/DHS)
This grant will allow the first phase of creating a steel drum band in the Duxbury High School and will expand the world music curriculum and allow Duxbury music students to gain an understanding of another culture.


2012

DMS/DHS Geography/History Virtual Online Curricula
This grant impacts Grade, 6,8, & 9 history and geography classes for virtual geography and world history instruction. This grant not only included the curricula, but laptop and iPad carts as well.

DMS Go Math-Lease of MacBook Station
This grant was funded to fully implement Go Math!differentiated online classroom, it included laptops which can also be used with other already acquired applications/licenses (Discovery Education, Study Island).

DHS Fully equipped Environmental Science Lab
The DEF is also honored to receive a $10,000 donation from Battelle which will support Duxbury High School environmental courses to develop a fully equipped environmental lab in 2012. Through this generous gift Battelle continues to support the science curriculum in key environmental science coursework while improving overall teaching and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.

Chandler iPad Cart
The goal is to give students the ability to produce and understand content for every subject area - literacy, math, science, and social studies. The simple interface of the iPad would enable all students, even pre-schoolers, to use them.

District Professional Development/Mass Cue Evaluators Program
Helps key staff learn how to effectively evaluate impact of technology initiative and how to refine professional development activities to take further strategic advantage of technology.

Alden Professional Development/Responsive Classroom
This 5 day workshop will train participating teachers and administrators in Responsive Classroom approach to teaching students with social development to ensure success in academics.

DMS Math-Fathom software
Fathom Dynamic Data Software for Real World Mathematics this is a student focused application to create connections between statistical data and mathematical concepts

Chandler General Education /Social Thinking
This grant was funded to supply every classroom at Chandler with Five Point Scale: a set of tools to assist children with regulation of social and behavioral concerns.  The program includes a “Five Point Scale” in each classroom.  The scale is a visual queue to help students recognize, express, and manage emotions.  Grant also includes various books to be used by students and training materials for teachers. This is currently being used in select classrooms with great success.  It can be applied to any student.

Alden Library Listening Library
This grant funded books that can be used independently at home or in small groups in classroom. The grant would support all students by providing an aid to help with critical listening and interpretive reading and provide a read aloud model.  The books would be utilized by all students at varying reading levels and would encourage students to select challenging books that may be above their reading levels.
