The DEF is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1989
after Proposition 2½ budget cutbacks forced the Duxbury school system to cancel many fine arts and enrichment programs.
The DEF receives, administers, and disburses funds for educational, scientific and charitable purposes
to be used to develop, support and assist programs which benefit the students, teachers, and staff of the Duxbury public school system.

Managed by a board of 21 volunteers, the DEF trustees meet regularly to organize fundraising activities
and consider grant applications. Any teacher or administrator in the Duxbury schools,
or anyone with a program designed to enrich the educational experience of Duxbury students may apply in writing for a grant.

Funds are made available for DEF grants through generous contributions.
To raise funds, the DEF coordinates an annual appeal and also runs seasonal community events, such as
the 4th of July Road Race, Polar Plunge, and Answer the Call.
